ESO 2013 REVIEW
We had a record number of teams from various parts of the Bay Area competing in the 6th annual Elementary Science Olympiad on June 8, 2013. Some of this year's events were Battery Buggy, Super Pulley, Science Jeopardy, and Experimental Design. We saw teams build tall (7+ feet) pulley systems in order to raise a dead weight of 1kg by 1 meter. There were ingenious designs to increase the mechanical advantage. The judges saw some creative cars that ran fast (covering 5m in less than 2 sec) and in a straight line. The Energy Box tested the knowledge of heat transfer and thermal conductivity of materials. Experimental Design required the teams to spontaneously create and test a hypothesis with the given materials. Besides these, the teams had fun competing in Science Jeopardy! conducted in the TV game show style with lock-out buzzer and Daily Doubles. Pentathlon tested the endurance of the whole team at the end of a long day requiring them to answer science questions in tandem with a physical activity.
Congratulations to all the teams that competed. The event ran smoothly and everybody worked hard to achieve this success. Thank you to all the amazing judges, assistants, volunteers, coaches, and parents that put in the hours of effort to make this event successful! Special thanks to all the high school judges who spent many hours in preparing for the event, despite their hectic academic schedule and high workload.
We hope the children had fun while learning and will pursue Science activities in future.
